I created gystsy in an effort to capture the sound I hope to develop as I delve deeper into music. The idea for the second half of the song came from messing with the audio playback speed settings in post production, which I decided to incorporate in order to establish a more experimental song structure.
In this song I wanted to hone in on beatmaking above all other components. The skittery percussion were sounds I recorded from a malfunctioning monitor and further distorted using pitch shift and effects in Ableton. I wanted to replicate the crunchy, distorted beat characteristic of many IDM songs in the last section of the song.
I created each sound of this track from scratch in an effort to develop my knowledge of basic sound design. The pads and sounds were all created from a sine wave template on the Synclavier V and polished with EQ, reverb, and other effects in Ableton.
This piece was made to be used as the theme for an animation project centered around Japanese mythology. The samples of rain, breaking glass, and bells were all recorded by me and used as reference to the character design and setting created.
I’ve worked on synthesizing sounds for music, particularly synth pads and drum sounds. The primary tools I use for this are the Synclavier V using the basic sine template and VCV Rack for a modular approach. I further distort the patches I create in Ableton Live for more interesting effects.
